Last night was crazy. It was Audrey's fault. Ok, my fault in the long run (if you want to look at it THAT way), but still mostly her fault. Let's take it from the top.
I lost our cell phone. Usually I'm much better at keeping track of important things, I swear! I don't know what it is about Ukraine that makes my memory go whack, but I've now lost my train pass and our cell phone. But let's move past this. The point is that I lost the phone and with the phone goes the alarm clock. Bad news if you don't have an alarm clock.
Trying to remedy the situation, we decide to use Audrey's phone from home for an alarm because it worked a few weeks ago when we needed it. But for some reason, her phone is PMSing and keeps going into 'power save mode' so the alarm won't go off. Maybe it will work if we charge it? I hope some of you are catching on to what's going to happen.
She plugged it in.
Bye-bye electricity.
She blew a fuse. A fuse on our half of the apartment. A fuse on our half of the apartment that the rest of the family isn't occupying at the moment.
At first we didn't really know what happened. After sitting in the dark for like 20 seconds we opened our door to see the hall light, the kitchen light, and all other lights were off, but not the light coming from where our family was. Interesting, no? Then we remembered that we're living in two separate apartments joined as one. Ah.. two different circuits. So now we have to find them and inform them that we have no electricity. Crap.
Begin procrastination period:
We notice shadows.
Shadow puppets! Anyone else ever seen a meerkat shadow puppet? Didn't think so.
(laugh for 5 more minutes about meerkats)
Decide to dance in the dark.
me, "Audrey, that thing is open-"
her, "OW!"
me, "..watch out?"
(laugh for 5 minutes)
New plan of attack:
me, "Ohmygosh, ohmygosh, you should take your phone.."
her, "..yeah?"
me, "AND PLUG IT IN ON THEIR SIDE OF THE HOUSE!"
(laugh for 10 minutes and wet pants)
(change pants and lay on bed because lungs hurt)
Start singing in German while lying on bed.
"Wir sitzen hier im Dunklen.. Wir koennen nichts sehen.. Wir koennen nichts machen.. Wir koennen nichts sagen.. Wir sitzen hier im Dunklen.." (translation: We're sitting here in the dark.. We can't see anything.. We can't do anything.. We can't say anything.. We're sitting here in the dark..)
(laugh for 10 minutes at the probability of our host mom finding us laying in bed and singing German with the power out)
New plan of attack:
Tie a note to the cat and send her down the hall. "SOS! WE CAN"T SEE!!"
(laugh for 5 minutes)
Host mom walks by.
"TANYA!!!"
(Audrey is busy laughing so I have to explain that there's no power. She doesn't speak English. Insert random/awkward hand motions here.)
Host mom flips a fuse right outside our door and power is back.
Just another night.
Happy Monday :)
P.s. The power was out for about 30 minutes. In that time we definitely could have informed our family. But, seriously, where is your sense of adventure?
P.p.s. If anyone was wondering, we ended up using the alarms on our Ipods. We set about 10 alarms just to be sure and didn't fall asleep until after 12. Yay 5 hours of sleep!
Just HILARIOUS! thanks for the laugh out loud! :D
